August BCP RFC Retrieved Port numbers below so-called "low numbered" ports can only be bound to by root Well-known port numbers specified by the IANA are normally located in this root-only space. Archived from the original on With this convention, it is indicating from less to more specific which port you are referencing.

Devices that have expansion slots also have slot 0, that is their built in ports. When you start plugging in modules, they become slots 1,2,3….

So with slot you are indicating where the port is, either on the device, or on a card on the device. Then comes the port number.

Here is an example of a router, with its built in ports and slots. Now, when you start adding in slots, it does get a little interesting. For example, when you look at a router, it has 4 HWIC interfaces. If you were to plug a module into each one, when the router booted up it would discover all 4. The bottom-right HWIC would be slot 0, the bottom-left would be slot 1, the top-right would be slot 2, and the top-left would be slot 3. That would reference the port built into the router itself. So when you are referencing the slots, the convention changes.

Same router, fourth HWIC, second port. If you only have one device, the slot number will always be 0. That would be slot 3 for the third devicesubslot 3 third module on the deviceport 0 first interface on the slot. So the convention expands to account for more complex setups, but it is still referencing least specific down to most specific.

Here is an example of a Cisco setup with multiple slots. You can see here the device will recognize multiple slots and their ports. Slot 3, subslot 1, and port 0. The easy way to figure out what interfaces your device recognizes will be to use the show ip interface brief command.

This will list all interfaces in the order recognized by the device. At boot time as part of the POST power-on self-test is the interface discovery process. If it finds one, it powers the module and adds the interfaces to the available configuration. Usually, the order will be the built-in interfaces and then the modules in the order of the display. In conclusion, the naming convention is there to help you identify exactly which interface you are configuring, and where it is physically located.

Which slot and port, or which chassis slot, subslot, and port. Just keep in mind less to more specific, and right-to-left, bottom-to-top. Contact Us. Cisco Device Port Naming Convention. You can just run though your configuration and see what's enabled -- management access on interfaces, SNMP, etc. Nothing I can think that matches exactly what you're looking for, but there are a few cool hidden commands :. Sign In. Global Communities. Community Resources.

Understanding Port Ranges and System Modes. Configuring the System Mode. Channelizing allows to configure various port ranges and system mode on QFX series switches.

The topics below describes the channelization process and configuring channelization on QFX series switches. On QFX and QFX switches, channelization is supported on fiber break-out cables using standard structured cabling techniques.

Platform support depends on the Junos OS release in your installation. When an et port is channelized to four xe ports, a colon is used to signify the four separate channels. Auto-channelization is not supported on interfaces contained in expansion modules, or on Virtual Chassis ports. You can disable auto-channelization by including the disable-auto-speed-detection statement at the [edit chassis fpc slot-number pic pic-number port port-number port-range port-range-low port-range-high channel-speed] hierarchy.

If you try to channelize ports that are restricted, the configuration is ignored. See Configuring the System Mode for more information. You cannot channelize the Gigabit Ethernet ports when they are operating as Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. Ports cannot be channelized individually. Only the first and fourth port in each 6XQSFP cage is available to channelize as part of a port range. In a port range, the ports are bundled with the next two consecutive ports.

For example, if you want to channelize ports 0 through 2, you would channelize port 0 only. If you try to channelize a port that is not supported, you will receive an error message when you commit the configuration. Auto-channelization is not supported on any ports. The following steps describe how to configure a block of ports or an individual port to operate as Gigabit Ethernet ports. Instead, configure the port range using the port statement. Starting from port 0, you channelize every third port to channelize a group of three ports.

For example, channelize port 0 to channelize ports 0 through 2, port 3 to channelize ports3 through 5, and so on.Similarly many of the official assignments refer to protocols that were never or are no longer in common use.
