Haval is here, and their proper 4WD offering has been improved. The brand is new to Australia, but they are big in their home of China. The Haval H9 on a simple river crossing. We did get some electrical gremlins on a deeper crossing. Panoramic sunroof. Full-time 4X4, with a rear locker. The 2. And the fact that no diesel options are available will irk many. The engine is surprisingly willing in the low rev range, and is consistent up to about 5,rpm.
After driving so many diesels, you forget how smooth and quiet a petrol can be. I have my reservations about how much fuel it will actually use in the real world, especially when working hard. The H9 on a very steep off-road descent.
It was all fairly controlled conditions, but the capability is still impressive. Where the driveline really improves is through the 8-speed automatic gearbox, which is sourced from and built by ZF in Germany. The other great thing about this is the Eaton locking differential in the rear, which work in good harmony with the slick off-road traction control and slinky rear end.
This makes the Haval H9 deceptively capable, as it impressively holds tractions through steep wombat holes and rutted climbs. In reality, your tyres and ground clearance are going to give up before your traction aids and articulation will. Just check your front-end ground clearance.
The leader in this segment is the LandCruiser Prado, and comparisons will inevitably be drawn between these to similar-yet-different vehicles.
Which is in itself a glowing recommendation for the Haval. The Prado does have noticeably more ground clearance and a better off-road traction control. A locking rear end, along with some slinky articulation in the rear end and a half-decent traction-control system makes the H9 dispatch of rough climbs and wheel lifts quite easily.
Haval H9 interior: Plenty of spec for your money. But more importantly, it feels well put together. Haval is not here to fornicate with funnel-webs. The interior fit out is noticeably good quality. All I could find was small niggles, which is the same for just about every other car out there. Haval tell us Great Wall is on a big poaching mission of Japanese, American and European talent lately.
And I reckon it has paid clear and obvious dividends in the overall quality of this vehicle. We like: Quite polished overall, sprightly powertrain, good level of technology inside and underneath, price.
About half an hour after driving the new H9 away from Haval New Zealand headquarters, I found myself thoroughly delighted with the whole experience. It's probably an equal measure of both, so bear with me as you read on.
The H9 is the third Haval to be launched in NZ, the most up-to-date and yet also the most old-school. Well, this H9 is a significant update of a model that's been around since It's also very large: nearly two metres tall, with a seven-seat cabin.
That's certainly how Haval thinks of it, if the exterior styling cues are anything to go by. The powertrain is fairly forward thinking though: this might be a kg separate-chassis SUV, but it's powered by a small-capacity turbo-petrol engine driving through an eight-speed transmission. It's not short on power, with kW, and the torque output is impressive with Nm at rpm - but it's well down on the likes of a diesel Prado's Nm if you really are thinking of heading off-road.
On the sealed stuff, the powertrain is quite sprightly and the ZF-sourced gearbox a particularly smooth operator. Short first and second ratios with one eye on off-roading help with the lively launch feel. So it delivers six-cylinder performance, but having to push 2.
The Combined figure of The H9 has double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, but it's no corner-carver. Like any proper off-roader, it can get a bit wobbly when the speeds rise. But it's no worse than a Prado in that respect and might even be better. The H9's safety tech includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and lane departure warning. All good stuff on a vehicle of this size, but what it doesn't yet have is autonomous braking, which will prevent it getting beyond its current four-star ANCAP crash-test rating.
It's coming this year, apparently. Both can wade through mm. So the Chinese car is in the ballpark, but what it can't really do is tow.
At least not tow the kind of weight Kiwis might expect a vehicle of this type to handle: the braked rating is kg, which is okay but not outstanding. There's been a real effort to make the H9 look classy inside. There's little that's genuine among the leather-look and wood-look trim, but it's actually pretty swish and tasteful all the same.
The Ultra gains gas-discharge headlights, a panoramic glass roof, heated steering wheel, heated seats for the first and second row, three-zone air conditioning and a pretty decent Infinity-branded sound system. The Ultra also gets ventilation and massaging functions for the front chairs, which are accessed via a slightly confusing sub-menu in the main touch-screen.
Nice though. It does stumble with last-row entry, since the middle seat only folds for that purpose on the right-hand road side. So yes, my delight is arguably out of proportion to the H9's talents. But not entirely unjustified. It has its issues, but the H9 is a genuinely good thing beyond merely being a cheap thing although it is also that. Heavy depreciation does seem likely, but at this price you've at least got a decent head-start on the capital-versus-cost-of-ownership equation.
David LinklaterApr 24 It can work. The Haval H9 is honestly a compelling buy when judged on the sheer number of features installed inside its fairly agreeable cabin, along with refinement, carrying capacity and, of course, price.
Where it falls is in terms of execution of some features. What of driving dynamics? Instead of a big V8 it uses a petrol 2. Curious for a peek further into its mountaineering skills, I took it on a not particularly testing path up some Jozi hills.
Our test vehicle was equipped with a tow bar and its motor feels capable of pulling the claimed braked 2,kg load. As it charges ahead the good sound deadening keeps outside noises and the rumble from its big tyres at bay. Three-car following distance protocols must ideally be observed. The quality and aura are now improved and the litany of luxury features found here will soften even the hardest of brand snobs.
Leather seats in three rows, 8-way electric driver seat, ventilation and massage seats, three-zone climate control and air-conditioning, 8-inch touchscreen, satellite navigation, automatic headlights with built-in cleaning system, day-time running lights, adaptive headlights, blind spot detection, lane change warning assist, reverse camera, panoramic sunroof, roof rails, side steps, inch aluminium alloy wheels, airbags, ISO-FIX child seat anchors, tyre pressure monitor, ABS, brake assist, ESP, hill-start assist control, roll movement intervention and cross-traffic alert.

From the crime scene: Cape Town attorney survives attempted hit.The company is said to be concerned that a potential public loss of confidence in diesel in the wake of the VW upheaval might significantly change market dynamics.
The big seven-seat H9 — a Toyota Prado competitor — and Jeep-Cherokee-sized H8 were both expected to have received the alternative diesel engine before the end of this year, but the company says it now cannot confirm when the diesel will arrive.
The best guess is some time in Another factor with a bearing on the diesel roll-out is the looming deadline for Euro 6 emissions compliance in both Australia and Europe. With Euro 6 standards set to be applied to all light-vehicle engines in Australia by the middle of — and sooner in Europe where Haval is also expected to launch soon — the company appears to be considering whether to simply wait until it has its Euro 6 engine ready for mass production rather than switch powertrains mid-stream.
Any delay means the current Euro 5-compliant diesel engine will at most have only a couple of years in the market before the switch. HMA public relations manager Andrew Ellis said he was unable to shed any light on the diesel roll-out at this stage.
He said it was his understanding that the diesel engine was still planned for Australia, but that Haval had made the responsible decision to review its diesel strategy in the wake of the current diesel engine scrutiny around the world.
The Haval vehicle with the greatest need for diesel is the flagship H9, which the company says was benchmarked against the Toyota Prado. Without diesel, Haval is fighting with one hand tied behind its back in a market segment dominated by diesel sales in Australia. The vehicle has been launched with a 2. Presuming it gets the 2. The engine was said to be a performance match for 3.
Reports out of China last year suggested the engine had already received market certification for Australia, as well as Europe, under Euro 5 emissions standards that become compulsory on all light vehicles sold in Australia late next year. The new engine might have been slated to replace that engine in Great Wall vehicles sold here, but because of a falling out between the independent distributor, Ateco Automotive, and Great Wall, it has not yet materialised.
Great Wall imports ceased last year, and just Great Wall-badged vehicles have been sold so far in If the dispute can be settled any time soon, a revised Great Wall ute range could be expected to include the newer powertrain under a new factory-guided import arrangement established by Great Wall.

Haval is an offshoot brand from Chinese ute-maker Great Walland among the various Havals sold in Australia the H9 is the only serious 4x4, the others being lighter-duty SUVs. In another touch of sophistication the Haval has an eight-speed automatic gearbox from German transmission specialist ZF, which is new and replaces the ZF six-speed used before.
Haval commits to a turbo petrol future. Smooth and quiet are also key words in terms of the way the car works on the open road. The ride is plush and both wind and road noise are well suppressed, not surprisingly both Prado traits.
4x4 of The Year 2018 #6: Haval H9 Ultra
In some ways, however, the ride is too soft at times and, combined with somewhat vague steering, the H9 can feel a bit loose and floaty, especially at higher speeds on bumpy and undulating roads. The H9 has a full-time 4x4 system courtesy of a BorgWarner dual-range transfer case with an active self-locking and self-proportioning centre differential, much like that employed with the Ford Everest. There are also terrain settings for Sand, Mud and Snow, but these are only available in low-range, which is an oversight as these setting should be available in both high and low range.
The H9 draws its intake air from the inner guard for safer water crossings a claimed mm wading depth and comes with solid front and rear recovery hooks. Our set-piece hill climb is designed to stop, or at least test to the max, any showroom-stock 4x4, but the Haval managed the climb without raising a sweat. In fact, the H9 was as good as any vehicle here. While it did its best work with the rear locker engaged, it also managed the climb without the locker. All of which can be put down to its long wheel travel, especially that of the rear live axle.
Again, very Prado like. Decent luggage space, too. Not so good is the somewhat fussy and unfriendly layout of the dash and switchgear, as well as some aspects of the fit and finish. Overall it averaged All of which means the litre fuel capacity translates to modest touring range.
And what you save on the initial purchase price over something like a Prado diesel is going to pay for an awful lot of petrol. Follow the 4x4 of the Year.
